1NT = 15-17

Lead 2

Players tend to HOLD UP when they SHOULD NOT DO SO.

This hand is an example where a) it is not necessary to Hold Up because leader has no more than 4 card suit and  b) more importantly you should not hold up in case they switch to Spades your other "dodgy" suit. You also know the opponents cannot take more than three tricks in Diamonds as the 2 lead must be from a four card suit.

So win the first trick and go to work on those marvellous Hearts.

The Heart finesse works and you now wrap up 4 Club tricks, 4 Heart tricks after three continuous Finesses and 1 Diamond.

With the Heart finesse right you wish you had been in Game. But if the heart finesse had been wrong you would still make your contract of 2NT. Unfortunately many were bidding the Game contract accepting partner's 2NT invitation with a massive 15 points and those lovely J109 s and we lost 2.89 IMPs on the board. All I have to show for it is this hand of the week L

  You can also play out the following hand  to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.com/movies.html )
