If you lazily play back your partner’s suit or continue Diamonds declarer will probably scramble home or at worst go one off.. However Graham decided that partner’s lead was probably a safe lead from a short Diamond suit and continuing Diamonds would help declarer more than the defence. He needed to take the Heart Ace of the table (the entry to the long Diamonds). With this in mind he played the Heart king and got an even better reward when partner turned up with a singleton Heart. The suit wasn’t going to get blocked and now the defence had no problem in wrapping up 7 tricks and defeating declarer by two tricks

Graeme Robertson again performed brilliancy at trick one when he switched to KH taking entry off table –double dividend when partner had singleton Queen now all his Hearts good when club led off table down two
