Once you see dummy you can work out that partner has at least 5 Hearts since declarer opened 1¨  and not 1©  which he would have done with five Hearts so declarer must have 4 Diamonds and 4 Hearts.

You main object then is to make sure you do not block the Hearts suit, as partner has five and you only have four.

On the Heart king and Jack you must now drop the Queen. Partner then gets in at trick 3 with Diamond Ace and fires back small Heart. You can now win with the 9 and play back to partner’s known Heart Ten and he now plays the 13th Heart to defeat the contract by one. You have won four Hearts and a Diamond as partner was on same wavelength as you.

(NB Perhaps South got what he deserved by not bidding correctly- Had he rebid 2¨  and not distorted his hand pattern, then they would get to the optimum safe contract of 5¨)

You can also view  watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.com/videos.html or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it )

alternatively watch the film www.haroldschogger.com/movies2.htm
