In order to have any chance of defeating this contract your Spade suit has to come into play and if you can then establish winners from the low Spades you must then be able to get back into the game. If partner has only two Spades and the Spades are divided around the table 332 then you need to keep yours and partner’s hand fluid. In order to achieve this you must lead the ª7 (4th highest) and not think of leading the Ace and having a look.

Declarer will win the first trick and then take the losing Diamond finesse. Because you haven’t cut yourself off from partner he will play back a Spade and now the contract will certainly go two down (4 Spades, 1 Diamond and 1 Heart).

If you, incorrectly, lead a top Spade on the layout of this particular hand you will still be alright if you play a low Spade at trick two because partner started off with 3 Spades after all.

You can also view  watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it ) and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.com/videos.htm

 alternatively watch the film www.haroldschogger.com/movies2.htm
