Partner leads from his longest suit but at tricks 1 you should know he has led from a bad quality suit without honours. How do you know this?

If partner had led a low Heart then it would be 4th highest from an honour but the ©6 looks like a second from bad suit lead. (NB if you dont already play this then you should adopt this style and you will see why in the next sentence).

With this knowledge that partner has a bad suit you should realise that there is now no future playing back ma second Heart tricks as the Hearts suit will be hard to establish.

You look at dummy and decide not to play up to the AQ of Diamonds suit so all that is left is clubs and Spades. Since South bid Spades we can now narrow it down to switching to clubs.

When we switch to clubs now we can produce three tricks for the defence. To add insult to injury when declarer plays a low spade from the dummy you play low and when declarer finesses the Spade Jack partner wins with the Queen

The defence now takes 2 Spades, 1 Heart and 3 clubs defeating the contract by two.

(When this hand was played against me the opposition continued Hearts and I guessed Spades and now the contract made)

You can also play out the following hand  to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.videoes.html or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it )

alternatively watch the film of the hand being played out by going to www.haroldschogger.com/movies2.htm
