Your best and possibly only chance to
make this contract is to hope West has the Club Ace and that the Diamond
finesse is working. You must also prey on West’s notion that second hand plays
low, At trick two, after winning the first
trick, you play the ♣8 from hand and if a sleepy West now plays low you go up
with dummy’s 10 and take the Diamond finesse. With the Diamond finesse working
you are just home with 2 Spade winners, 6 Diamond winners and one sneaky Club
winner. Any other attempt to try and make this
contract will fail, as the defence will set up their Spades and take you two if
not three down. If West is awake and sees that you have not attempted to win the
first trick with dummy’s Jack and works out that you have just the AK doubleton
then he might go in with his Ace and now your contract is doomed – the club suit
is blocked and you will not be able to get to dummy for the Diamond finesse. If
on the other hand you attempt to play the Club King at trick two you must now
hope that West takes his Ace, but he shouldn’t (not easy for poor West
