The opponents cash the first two Heart tricks and you win the third trick with your Heart Jack. Plan your play to maximize your trick potential.
This hand shows the effects of playing off your long suit before dealing with a semi problematic suit. Here, you have no problem with Clubs and can real off 6 Club winners provided the Clubs break no worse than 4:1. The Diamonds will provide 4 winners too if they break 3:3 not such a likely occurrence.
Let’s watch as declarer tests the clubs to see if it is breaking 3:2. As he plays the last Club “poor” East is squeezed and cannot hold the Spade Ace and four diamonds at the same time. When West releases a Diamond now declarer can release his Spade king and although the Diamonds broke 4:2 he now makes all the remaining tricks. He has made 1 Heart, 4 Diamonds and 6 Clubs for a very nice Match point score.
Of course West should duck the second Heart a) to keep communications with partner b) to break up the squeeze.
