This hand involves a
lot of finessing and quite a bit of luck but at the 11th hour you
will be able to squeeze West. You will need to take finesses in three suits. After winning the first
trick in dummy take your first finesse in Hearts. When it wins, you are now in
hand ready to take a deep finesse in Spades and because the bridge gods are with
you, the 9 wins the trick after West plays low . You now re-enter hand safely
with a Club to take the Spade finesse again but this time an “on the ball” West
splits his honours and the suit will now only produce three tricks. You now come back to
hand with a Club pleasantly surprised to see the suit breaking 3:3 which
suggests that West was uncomfortable with his original lead and probably holds
all the important cards that you are looking for. You now finesse the
Diamond Jack and when this holds you cash your winning Spade just in case the
other top spade honour was coming down in three rounds. You cash the thirteenth
Club, You now come back to hand with the Diamond King. When you cash the Heart
Ace now, West is squeezed in Diamonds and Spades and when he discards the Spade
Queen your 10 in dummy is high for a well earned 13 tricks and all the Match
Points. You can also view
watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe
programme or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it ) and
it is available free from
