On this hand after the auction you have to be careful and try to give as little away as possible when you lead. You also know declarer has 20 points, dummy maybe 3 points so partner has 6,

You might lead the Club Jack top of sequence or Diamond Three (4th highest).

However if you make either of  these leads, declarer will wrap up 8 tricks.

So what to lead ? Which suit to get your defensive tricks ?

If you lead your Spade Ace and have a look at dummy you will be better placed to know what to play next.

Once you lead the Spade Ace, partner encourages and you take the first 5 tricks from just the Spade suit with declarer under a lot of pressure to discard on the 4th and 5th cards. Partner now exits with a low Diamond and not surprisingly declarer plays low and partner wins with his Queen and fires back another one to your Ace.

Instead of letting declarer romp home with 8 tricks, you have taken the first 7 tricks and defeated him by two tricks for a huge Match Point score.- well defended,

You can also watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. To view this programme you will need  to download htttp://www.haroldschogger.com/bridgevu.setup
