Our hand this weeks comes from a teams match against Haberdashers Boys School which we subsequently lost despite this hand.

South ends up in 4© and you make a passive Mud Lead §9 trying to give nothing away.

After winning the first trick with the Club  Ace in dummy declarer plays dummy's Queen of Diamonds. Strange switch considering this is your suit. You win with the Ace and take stock. Declarer seems to be trying to establish Diamond tricks early. He probably has the King in the closed hand. So where are our defensive tricks going to come from. Partner discouraged the first trick, and now declarer is playing Diamonds.

In order to make 4 tricks, ie defeat the contract we must do something very much against the grain. We will have to play a Spade and see if partner encourages. if he doesn’t then there was no defence to this hand, When we play the Ace partner encourages with the Jack and without much ado we now cash two more Spade tricks to defeat the contract by on.

Declarer gave us a chance to go wrong and put us to the test at trick Two and we have to switch to Spades.
