Playing Teams, the ªJ
is led - plan your play.
Can you take out any early insurance ?
Initially it looks like you have a lot of tricks here – 2 Spades, 6
Diamonds and 5 clubs, but what if the Diamonds don’t break then you will need
a back up plan since you cannot afford to lose a Diamond and the Heart Ace.
So, after winning the first trick in dummy, play a Heart towards your
hand and when East plays low now play diamonds and although they break badly you
can in fact afford to cash the third Diamond before playing up to the remaining
Heart honour. With the favorable lay of the Heart suit you now bring home 2
Spades, 2 Hearts, 3 Diamonds and 5 clubs.
