We are in 4© and West leads his partner’s suit (ª4) and we take stock. We have 6 Hearts in the bag plus Club Ace – 7 tricks – we need to find 3 more.
Two will come from Diamonds once we have dislodged the Diamond Ace but where will the third one come from ?
If West has made a genuine lead and his ª4 promises an honour in his partner’s suit then we will be able to finesse him. Does he have the 10 or the Ace ? Well East must have the Ace for his overcall and West surely would not underlead the Spade Ace at trick one ? Therefore West must have the 10.
With this in mind, we draw trumps and then play the ª9 and let it run taking advantage of dummy’s Spade 8. When the 9 brings the Ace from East we are now home.
We will make, 1 Spade, 6 Hearts, 2 Diamonds and 1 Club.
In hindsight, if West had led a Club then the defence would prevail and get a Club trick too. However this would be very unreasonable as East, his partner, had bid Spades.
