Declarer tries the Jack at trick one, won by partner's Queen who now plays the Heart Ace and switches to a club.
In order to defeat this contract you will need to take 4 tricks and after 3 tricks you are 3/4 of the way there.
What to do now?
Do you now play the ♦King back hoping to establish a Diamond trick once dummy's Ace has gone?
Or do you do what is called "follow partner's defence" ?
Why has partner now switched to a Club? Oh ! maybe partner has only one club and can now ruff!
So you dutifully play a second club and do get a pleasant surprise when partner does ruff and you take the setting trick.
When I originally played this hand my partner played Top Diamond back and now declarer got home making 5 spades, 4 Clubs and 1 Diamond.
(He now knows about following partner's defence☺☺)
