You lead from your long strong suit the Diamond King as you have KQ10 and partner duly wins the first trick and fires back the Jack – over to you.
You should have noticed the 9 and 8 falling from declarer and that YOU MUST NOW OVERTAKE that Jack so you can cash three more Diamond winners. While you are cashing those Diamond winners notice what partner throws.
Partner throws two low Clubs discouraging Clubs and then the ª8 which is an encouraging signal asking you to play a Spade once you have cashed all your Diamonds
You cash 5 diamonds and then the Spade Ace. You have taken the first 6 tricks and have held declarer to exactly 7 tricks. Many of the other pairs will block the Diamond suit and let 9 or even 10 tricks through and many players will be playing in Hearts and make 9 or more tricks so with your expert defence you will get a good Match Point score for holding this contract to seven tricks.
