On this hand from a recent Crockfords Match West decided to lead the Diamond King and from then on there was no problem in making 12 tricks although for some unknown reason 9 tricks only were made in the other room. The lead suggested shortage and also it suggested that West held the Spade Ace as he had refused to lead his partner’s suit.

Fearing a ruff, first things first, you draw trumps, delighted to see the Heart Queen fall in two rounds. Once trumps are drawn you enjoy all the diamonds, after letting West have his Queen. throwing a Club from hand. You can now play three rounds of clubs trumping the third round. When the clubs break 33 the 13^th Club is now established and you bring home  12 tricks losing just one Diamond.

You have made 3 natural trumps, 4 Diamonds, 2 Clubs, 1 established Club and 2 ruffs.
