3NT was a punt

4© was possible sacrifice

5§ was a punt too

After a somewhat bizarre auction I punted 5§ on the South hand.

Not unreasonably West led a Spade knowing partner was promising the Majors

Having escaped a  Heart lead, I quickly won the first trick and played two top Diamonds dumping the Heart loser. I was not out of the woods yet and need to establish the Spades also  needing to ruff two spades in dummy.

I now played a second Spade and when West got in he tried to cash a top Heart. Too late. I was now almost home. I ruffed and then ruffed a Spade in dummy. I ruffed another Heart back to hand in order to ruff one more Spade. Now the spades were set up. I played a top club and East won and got off lead with a Heart. I was able to ruff and draw the last trumps delighted to see them breaking kindly.

I got home with 1 Spade, 2 Diamonds, 2 Spade ruffs, 5 trumps and 1 established spade.

If at any time East had played Ace and another club, I would have been a trick short. Should East know to do that? Of course. i had only tried to dump one Heart on the second round of Diamonds and I had made no attempt to draw trumps, had I?
