This hand also comes from the EBU Silver Plate semi finals and after a good start I messed up because I didn’t give myself the “extra chance”.

At trick 1 I played dummy’s ª9 pleased to see the King appear from East who now played another spade.

At the outset I now have 2 Spades, 1 Heart , hopefully all four Diamonds assuming a kind 3:2 break and 1 Club so therefore I needed one more and my only real hope was to finesse up to my Club Queen which I now did at trick 3 after winning the second trick with dummy’s Spade Jack.

When the finesse failed I had to go off.

Now let’s replay. If my only chance is to finesse the Club Queen there is little risk to cashing  the Ace first. If I had cashed the Ace first and see the Jack appear I would now play West for a Doubleton King ( I expect that my right hand opponent might with 5 good clubs might have Doubled the Club bid for a lead). I now merely play a low club from each hand and watch  as West’s King falls on air. Oh to be clever afterwards but nevertheless a column for the web page this week.
