What is good for the goose is good for the gander. If declarer is supposed to count winners to see how many extra he needs to make his contract so must the defender do the same thing.
Initially East can count one winner from Clubs only.
Therefore, to defeat the contract, he is going to need to find three more.
Partner will need to have a singleton Club and he will be able to give partner an immediate ruff. However that is only a second trick for the defence. If partner has a top Heart or top Spade that will still only be one more trick. Therefore for the contract to go down he will need to assume partner has the Diamond Ace, and at trick two, instead of giving partner an immediate ruff, he must play the Diamond Queen. This will create a finesse for the defence if declarer has the missing King. If the Queen holds he could now give partner a club ruff.
In fact declarer tries the King. Partner Aces it and fires back a Diamond won by East’s Jack. East now give his partner the club ruff and to add insult to injury there is still the Spade Ace to come.
The defence realizes the first five tricks with 1 Spade, 2 Diamonds 1 Club and 1 club ruff.
