After the Ace King of Diamonds lead followed by a Heart switch you take stock. You have 2 Certain Spades, 3 Diamonds and 2 Clubs. You can ruff a Club or a Heart for your tenth trick. You then consider losers. You have already lost 2 Diamonds and if the spades behave unkindly you could lose two Spades if you don’t take the safety play to guarantee 3 tricks out of four. (ie by cashing the Ace first them leading low towards the 9).
Bearing all this in mind, you win the Heart and immediately cash the Spade Ace duly noting West’s fall of the Ten. You then play the 9 ready for the safety play (in case West does still have the missing Queen) which holds.
You then finesse the remaining Spade Queen and can now claim all four trumps, 2 Hearts, 3 Diamonds and 2 Clubs for an above average Match Point Score.
