Some hands are really easy and if you play too quickly,as I do, you can easily mess them up, as I did.
Firstly, I was playing IMPs where overtricks are not important and my first feeling was to trump clubs twice in the dummy. When following this line East overtrumped cashed the top Heart and played another Heart and after trumping high I now went down in a fairly easy contract, (Also the hand is what is known as OPEN BOOK- East opened 1♥ so you know East has to have EVERYTHING to bring his total points to 13)
Now lets rewind. Initially after the Heart lead I had 3 Spade winners 1 Diamond winner and 2 Club winners totalling 5 winners without doing any work.
If the trump suit breaks 3:2 two more tricks will be generated from the trump suit itself. The Heart lead now guarantees me 1 Heart trick so all that is needed is to ruff 1 club in dummy, the short hand, while there are still trumps in dummy.
Therefore let the first trick come around to your Heart King. East is a good player and follows suit with the ♥10 at trick 1.
You now play Ace of clubs and trump a club and then draw trumps. Your club King will make after drawing all the trumps. You made 5 trumps, 1 Heart, 1 Diamond, 2 Clubs and 1 club ruffed (early).
