When this hand was played by my partner she immediately drew trumps and went one off because she didn’t count her winners and losers.

Initially you have 4 winners only- 3 Top Spades and 1 Top Diamond. 

On the losers front it’s a different story- 1 losing heart (you can trump after one round) 1 Losing Diamond (you can trump after one round) and 1 losing Club so it seems there should not be a problem making it. 

However, you need to find 6 more tricks and only 4 will come from trumps in your hand (you have to concede the Ace some time). So the other two will have to come from ruffing TWO Diamonds in the short hand, dummy.

Because my esteemed partner touched trumps straight away and the trumps broke badly, East, when he got in played another trump and now she could only ruff one losing Diamond and had to end up a trick short.

So back to the plot - after winning the first trick play another Diamond immediately. East wins and does his best to foil your plan by playing Ace another Club. Now, however you can win and still have two trumps left on the table. After winning the second trump in hand ruff a club. Now return to hand via a Spade in order to ruff your last (and second Diamond).

Now return to hand with a top Spade and draw East’s last trump.

You eventually made 4 trumps, 1 Diamond, 2 Diamond ruffs (in the short hand) and 3 top Spades.
