In
order to defeat this contract it is necessary to count winners and ascertain how
much extra work needs to be done to break this part score.
After the lead, you know you
have 2 hearts in the bag since you sit over dummy’s King with your Ace Queen.
You have 1 Spade trick (the Ace). You will be able to give partner a third round
Heart ruff because his lead marks him with a doubleton (Had he started with
three he would have led a low Heart). This brings the total to only 4. So you
will need to find 2 more. The bidding suggests that declarer is minimum, since
he quickly retreated to 2ª
after partner’s Unassuming Cue Bid.
This
leaves partner with room to have a Club honour, either the ace or king. If this
is the case you will be able to obtain one more club trick but this is still not
enough to defeat the contract. However if you switch to a Club at trick 2 and
partner “follows your defense” by playing the suit back, while you still
have control of the trump suit this will bring in a sixth defensive trick you
will be able to bring about a club ruff for yourself after partner has had his
Heart ruff.
