The opponents play two rounds of Diamonds.

Playing MP’s where every overtrick is vital Plan your play.

 

This hand comes from the 18th Worldwide Bridge Contest 2004. Once the opponents force you to ruff out the second Diamond reducing dummy’s trumps to just three you will have to be careful that you set up the hearts early and leave an entry back to dummy. Assume the trumps break 32 (68%)  and the Hearts 32 (68%).

Ruff the second Diamond and immediately set up the Hearts by playing Ace King and ruffing the third one High with the ªJ (no embarrassing overuffs). Now draw the trumps and cash 4 winning Hearts. At this point in time you have made 10 tricks -3 trumps, 5 Hearts and a ruff in each hand. Your contract is safe. So at trick 12 lead a club off the table and finesse for 2 overtricks and a fine Match point Score. (NB Main point in the accompanying hands booklet about this hand is that the 44 heart fit produces 12 tricks whereas the Hearts, 62 fit, will only produce 11 tricks)
