This hand came from our recent first round Crockfords Match and it was a pity not to have ended in 6ª despite the adventurous auction. 2NT was Jacoby with 3¨ showing a singleton with 4§ and 4© being cue bids.
Could you now make 12 tricks?
After winning the first trick you embark on Spades playing the King first to cater for a singleton Honour in East. East duly obliges and the “Theory of Restricted Choice” should kick in. The Theory of Restricted choice says that if an honour appears the other honour is twice as likely to be in the other hand (Here Doubleton Queen Jacks are rare).
You now finesse the Spade Ten and when the clubs break 3:3 you bring home 12 tricks.
You will make 5 trumps (from the long hand) 2 Hearts 1 heart ruff (in the short hand) 1 Diamond, 2 Clubs and 1 established club. Pity you weren’t in but we still won the match
