After a somewhat prolonged convoluted auction North South got to 5♦ playing in a 5:2 fit and West led a trump cutting back on any possible ruffing.
My partner proceeded to draw trumps and when the heart finesse failed went one down losing two more clubs.
Let us now replay. Does declarer have any redeeming features in his hand? The spades, but if the spades could be established how will he get back to his hand? No entry. Any other useful feature? Yes, having a singleton Heart means he could trump a heart before touching any more trumps and rely on the hearts breaking 3:3 or the Queen falling doubleton.
With all this in mind, after winning the first trick in hand, declarer should play Ace and another heart ruffing the second Heart in hand.
Now trump a spade to get to table and draw 2 more rounds of trumps pleased to see the trumps breaking 3:3. Now play on Hearts and when the bridge gods are kind in that suit with the suit also breaking 3:3 declarer can claim 11 tricks :- 5 trumps, 2 Hearts, 1 Heart ruffed and 3 established Hearts.
