How did the USA women bring home this slam contract after the ¨Q lead ?

 

This hand comes from the 12th World Bridge Olympiad DVD which shows many of the great hands from the tournament held in Turkey in 2004.

On this hand the USA women ventured into the small slam after a very complicated bidding sequence. There were no problems in any of the suits except the trump suit itself and it was all a matter of restricting the trump suit to no more than one loser. There are various ways to play this trump holding. You can play low towards the Queen or low towards the 10 or merely cash the Ace and see if an honour appears. After winning the first trick with dummy’s king followed by a great deal of thought declarer called for a Heart from dummy and when East played low, inserted the 10, delighted to see it hold. She now played a low Heart towards dummy’s Queen to discover the bad break. East took the King and played back a Spade. Now it was a matter of winning the Jack, playing the ace of clubs and taking a Club ruff. She took the marked heart finesse against East and claimed.

Declarer had made 5 Spades, 3 trumps, 2 Diamonds 1 Club and 1 Club ruffed.
