In Match Points you need to try and get as many tricks as possible and not let declarer make overtricks.
On this hand played at the Eilat Bridge club after the Lead with very little else to go on West switched to Diamonds and now the defenders were able to cash 1 more trick holding the contract to 11 tricks for an above average score. With any other play declarer has no problem wrapping up 12 tricks.
With nothing else to go on you might think on the following lines :- declarer has just dropped the King so no future in Spades, Declarer has therefore probably got a distributional hand after going onto 4H. You see the Club Ace in dummy. If there are club tricks coming partner will be there for you, so it seems that the only switch that might produce extra tricks is Diamonds. It does only produce one extra trick but it was the difference here between an almost top score and an almost shared bottom score.
