Initially, you have 2 Spades, 1 Diamond and
1 Club. Therefore you will need to find 5 more tricks. If the clubs break or you
can pin the Club ten you will get at least 4 more tricks from this suit if not 5
(if the club Ten is doubleton and the King is onside). However this is an unlikely scenario so
where will you go for your 9th trick ? If you go after the Diamond finesse and it
fails you could lose 2 Spades, 2 Minor suit Kings as well as the Heart Ace. If
you go after the Hearts for your 9th trick you will not put your
contract at risk since you still maintain control of the Diamond suit without
taking an unnecessary losing finesse. NB From the lead we know that the Spades are
breaking 4:4 and there is no apparent problem with this suit. Therefore we can
give the lead up twice (once in Clubs and once in Hearts). With all this in mind after winning the
first trick in Hand we take a losing Club finesse. When the spade comes back its
now a matter of establishing on more Heart for our 9th trick. We will
make 2 Spades, 1 Hearts 1 Diamond and 5 clubs. You can also view
watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe
programme or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it ) and
it is available free from
