From the bidding East knows that South
has 19+ points balanced (otherwise why didn’t south overcall 1NT at the start ?). Therefore he can work out that partner
has no values at all and he can count declarer’s tricks as 6 Diamond tricks, 4
probable club tricks plus two Hearts ie 12 tricks. Therefore at trick two unless East cashes
a second spade trick declarer will wrap up 12 tricks. You can also view
