The bidding indicates that North has enough to go to the two level and South has a good hand. Therefore 4© should be a walk in the park. In order to obtain a good Match Point Score you are going to have to hold the contract to 10 tricks.

If declarer has good trumps and a good Diamond (he bid Diamonds) or good Spade suit then declarer can easily make 11 tricks. What is the best way to obtain an extra trick for the defence?

The only suit that will give you a chance of an extra trick must therefore come from Clubs (maybe partner has Ace or Queen) Active Auction Active Defence..

Therefore at trick one although it’s a risk you need to lead a small club.

Partner turns up with the Queen. Because the Diamond finesse fails and you have the trump Ace you now realize 3 defensive tricks. With a non Club lead declarer will be able to set the Diamonds up for a discard of his club loser. Even though East is ruffing the third Diamond, declarer  can still go over to dummy and try another Diamond.. East is out of Diamonds and declarer gets his club loser away.

With a Club lead the you and your partner will take 1 Club trick, 1 Diamond trick and 1 Heart trick for a good Match Point score holding it to 420 rather than 450
