On our hand this week an initial count shows 6 winners- 2 Spades, 1 Heart, 2 Diamonds and 1 Club.
On the losers count hopefully no more than 1 trump 1-2 Hearts.
To keep the Heart losers to just one we will need to ruff one Heart on the table before drawing trumps and also quickly dump a Club loser.
After winning the first trick immediately play two rounds of Diamonds to shed the club loser and then play ©8 from dummy which is covered by East and won by the Ace. Concede a Heart to East’s K. East gets off lead with the trump Ten trying to deprive you of Heart ruffs but you are ahead of the game. You take the Ace and ruff a Heart.
You now come back to hand by ruffing a club to now draw the remaining trumps. The trumps broke badly (4:1) but the Ten fell promoting your 9 and 7.
You eventually won 5 trumps (from the long hand) 1Heart and one Heart ruffed and 1 established Heart (due to your careful play of the Hearts suit and the fact that East had both the King and Queen of Hearts), 2 Diamonds and 1 Club, losing just one Heart and the Queen of trump.
NB Had a trump been led then you would have to either set up Diamonds or lead up to your AJ of hearts and get lucky with East holding both the King and Queen of Hearts)
