Most
tables, wanting to take out the entry from dummy switched to a Diamond. Now the
defence was all over as declarer merely drew trumps and enjoyed the long Diamond
suit.
Graham thought it through further and realised he needed 4 tricks to defeat 4ª.
Surely his partner held more than Queen/Jack Clubs for his pre-empt . Partner
had either a top Diamond or possibly

this in mind at trick two he switched to the

Declarer was able to win and pull trumps. Now declarer had to dislodge East’s
Diamond Ace and now East could play another Heart and two Heart tricks
materialized for the defence. The defence now makes 1 Club. 1 Diamond and 2
Hearts to defeat the contract by one. Well played Graham. You can also view
