This is same hands as last week but this
time we are sitting in the East seat and this time we are defending 4ª,
not 2. To defeat 4ª
we only need to conjure up 4 defensive tricks. Partner leads a Heart and
declarer immediately throws a Diamond on the second top Heart. It looks like one
of our Diamond tricks have gone. Let us hope we can still make two top Diamonds
as well as the Ace of trumps. Declarer delays drawing trumps and takes a winning
club finesse followed by a Club ruff in hand. As long as declarer has no more than two
trumps the Diamond trick can come back if I can get a Diamond ruff. So on the
third round of Clubs I will chuck a Diamond and have the same number of Diamonds
as dummy. Having taken his ruff declarer starts to draw trumps and partner
follows to the first round and I hold up. Declarer now plays a second round of
trumps and I win with the Ace. I now play Ace and another Diamond and as long as
partner plays back a third Diamond I will uppercut dummy. If dummy trumps low I
can overtrump and if dummy discards I can ruff with my ten. Our fourth defensive
trick has come back from the Diamond suit after all.
