Our hand this week comes from the online bridge site OK Bridge where my esteemed partner Brett demonstrated a fine discovery play without making an immediate unnecessary finesse.

After winning the first trick he realized he had 10 winners by way of 4 Clubs, 1 Diamond 2 Hearts and 3 spades.

One extra trick could come from Diamonds and another from spades either by  relying on the Spades to break 3:3 or a late finesse in Spades.

After winning the first trick in hand he cashed four top clubs seeing the clubs break 4:2 with East holding 4. From East’s initial bid he now knew 10 of East’s original cards (ie 6 Hearts and 4 Clubs).

He now led up to Dummy’s Diamond holding and East went in with the King with East following suit. West now exited with a second Diamond.

Now East’s hand was an open book 2:6:1:4 shape and it was now a matter of cashing two top spades before taking the marked finesse of the Jack of Spades through West.

Well played Brett.
