On this hand from Ok Bridge my partner, Lilias Lamont from Chichester, after a dubious overcall found a good defence to bring declarer well and truly down.
After winning the first trick with my Ace I played back the ♣ 7 (top of a Doubleton) and partner stopped playing clubs because she needed me to get the lead and play another club through declarer.
She knew from the bidding that declarer had at most 12 points which meant I could still have a Queen. She also knew from the bidding (playing SAYC) that South could not have three card Heart support so she could place me with three and declarer with two. With this in mind she switched to a Heart and found me with Q10 over dummy’s Jack.
Declarer was not in a position to let me take the trick and won the Heart switch with the Ace. He now played a Spade to the King and finessed what he thought was into the safe hand (protecting his club holding).
However he had not allowed for my partner’s ruthless defence. She won her Queen cashed a top Heart before putting me in with the Queen and I was now able to put another Club through.
We were to take 1 Spade, 2 Hearts and 5 clubs and poor declarer did not know what had hit him. Well done Lilias
