After winning the third Spade which fortunately is not ruffed and West proves to be a friendly defender, you must now draw trumps ending in Hand after two rounds of trumps.

Normally one does not take a finesse in a suit where there are no losers at the start. This is the case in the Club suit. However it is a no cost finesse because even if it fails you still have control of the hand and will be able to dump two losing Diamonds on the remaining top clubs.

With this in mind, you now take the club finesse which is successful and can then go onto chucking the  two Diamond losers on the remaining top clubs.

You proceed to make 1 Spade, 6 Hearts, 1 Diamond and 3 clubs for a very good score.

NB Had West switched to a Diamond at trick 2 it would be a very different matter and now the defence would have the upper hand and now you cannot afford to take a possible losing club finesse.

You can also play out the following hand  to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.videoes.html or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it )

alternatively watch the film of the hand being played out by going to www.haroldschogger.com/movies2.htm
