When I played this hand online I totally messed up.
I held up the first trick to try and cut communications between the two defenders and subsequently took a Spade finesse, which lost. Convinced that West could not have the Heart King (as he had not opened initially) I now played off Ace and another Heart and went sailing off.
Now let's replay the hand sensibly.
After holding up I can play Ace and another Spade not minding if I lose to West and if the king doesn’t fall then I can always take the Heart finesse later.
So after winning the 2nd Club I should have played Ace and the King appears and I can now see why West didn’t open in the first place ( He discounted his Spade King when he counted his points)
I now took the Heart finesse which won
. I came back to hand with a spade and took the Diamond finesse into the safe hand(East) and West released the Queen- I returned to hand with the carefully persevered Spade to take another Diamond finesse through West and it succeeded. I was now home with 11 tricks instead of miserably going one off.
I had made 4 Spades, 2 Hearts, 3 Diamonds and 2 clubs.
