The essence of good defence is PATIENCE and really waiting for your tricks to come to you especially when you defend 1NT when the points are likely to be split 21 versus 19 or 22 versus 18.. If the opposition had more then they would have made a move forward.

Declarer comes back to hand and finesses up to the Diamond king to no avail. You take the Ace and persevere with Spades, taking away any ambiguity you play the Queen so partner knows where it is. Declarer holds up and you play a third spade which declarer wins. Declarer now ducks a round of Hearts allowing you to win with the Jack. You play a fourth spade to partner who cashes his two winning spades. He cashes a top Diamond before exiting with a club over to your Ace and now you have set the contract by one trick. Declarer has no trouble in making the rest. You made, with partner, 3 Spades, 1 Heart, 2 Diamonds and 1 club.
