When this hand was played against me poor declarer let the first trick come around to her hand winning first trick with the Queen and after drawing trumps, declarer, expecting the clubs to be breaking 3:2 or 4:1 with West holding the King now  played the Club Ace and now the contract was doomed as East had to make two more Club tricks.

If you aren’t so careless, and work out what the lead is then you can guard against either player holding all four of the remaining Clubs. Maybe the Club Four is a singleton or maybe it is 4th highest of the longest suit.

After drawing trumps ending in dummy play a second club off the table, and when East plays low, play the 8 guarding against a 4:0 split in either opponent’s hand. When the Club 8 holds you are now home making 3 Spades, 5 Hearts 1 Diamond and 3 clubs.

You can also watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. To view this programme you will need  to download htttp://www.haroldschogger.com/bridgevu.setup

  alternatively watch the film www.haroldschogger.com/movies2.htm
