On this hand played against me in the Grand Masters this year, when West got the lead with the Diamond Queen (declarer taking a losing Diamond finesse) she switched to a Club hoping partner had some values in Clubs and not wanting to give away a trick in Spades.
Let's rewind. Declarer needed to use up the Queen to beat partner's 8 at trick 1. Using up the Queen to win this trick marked partner with 1098 of Spades and when West got in, it was perfectly safe to play another Spades. Now declarer has to go down with the defence taking 3 Spades and 2 Diamonds. (NB this is why you follow suit with the lowest of touching honours to help your partner, the other defender).
