This hand came from the Eastbourne Summer Congress Pairs and if you like stripping then this is the hand for you.
After winning the first trick with the Ace you will need to start eliminating Diamonds from both hands (often called stripping the hand down). So cash the Diamond Queen and ruff a Diamond. Now come back to hand with a top trump and ruff the last diamond High (to avoid being overtrumped). Now play a second trump pleased to see the trumps break 22. The elimination is now complete where you have eliminated diamonds from both dummy and your own hand and also eliminated trumps from the opposition thereby relieving them of a safe exit card.
You now play a Club which is won by East, who plays a club back to partner. West now plays a Spade and you merely cover with the Queen. Whatever black card is now played back by East, you either have your remaining Jack as a winner or are given a ruff and discard in Clubs. In effect the opponents have done your play in the black suits for you, enabling you to lose no more than 4 tricks in the black suits and give you a well deserved top.
As the cards lie, had West led an original Spade you would make just the 8 tricks but do you blame West for leading a Diamond?
