On our featured hand this week from the Quarter finals of this year’s Gold Cup, East has to count his defensive tricks at trick One or he will not defeat this contract.
From the bidding he knows his partner has at most 2/3 points (ie good for nothing). The lead is sure to be a singleton (having not led Hearts, the suit bid by East) so he knows he can give his partner a ruff. And he has two black Aces himself so where is the setting trick going to come from?
He has to engineer a Diamond ruff for himself but partner does not have an entry. However, he does have one entry when he ruffs a Diamond, but East will not get a Diamond ruff that way since he has not cleared the Diamond suit yet.
Since East has control of the trump suit (he has the Ace) he can delay giving partner the club ruff for the moment and has to immediately play his singleton Diamond at trick two.
Declarer wins in dummy and plays a trump. East now goes in with the Ace straight away and now gives his partner a Club ruff. Partner following East’s defence now reciprocates and now plays a second diamond enabling East to ruff and take the contract 0ne off.
The defenders have realised 4 tricks from 2 Black Aces and 2 Minor suit ruffs.
