1. 2♥ good raise asking partner to define hand further. 2. Minimum. 3. One more try with good heart stopper.

When dummy came down I was a bit disappointed not to be in 4♠ or 3NT and thought it might easily make.

However it proved to be wrong as my worthy opponent found the best defence.

After I had set up dummy's Spade suit West was on lead and reasoned I now had an easy run to 8 if not 9 tricks and he sat and thought it through. He knew that there were now 4 winning Spades in dummy plus 2 more heart tricks as surely declarer must have started with AQJ so now it was a matter of finding the correct minor switch. The Club switch would immediately give declarer a club trick for his contract. He knew partner had at the most 4/5 points. he thought "Let us hope and pray partner has the Diamond King". After all this thinking he switched to a low Diamond won by partner's King who now FOLLOWED PARTNER'S DEFENCE and played back another diamond through dummy's Q10 and they took 3 more diamond tricks holding me to just 8 tricks.

It still wasn't a good result as a few were in 3NT making and a few in 4♥ making.

All I have to show for it is the sensible defence found by East. It could have been worse had I been in 3NT going one off..
