Our hand this week comes form the Red Sea Bridge festival and I played like a complete beginner much to my partner’s chagrin.

Firstly I will tell you how to play the hand then my misdemeanour.

Having taken a sacrifice with favourable vulnerability West led ace and another Spade which you should ruff. You now need to get out the top trumps before embarking on the Diamonds.

You play the Top Heart which West plays the Ace and then gets off lead with a third Spade. You ruff and now play another top Heart which East wins with the King. He now plays the Club Jack which you win.

You now draw the last trump and you are at the crossroads of the hand and need to find the Diamond Queen. Having been told that East has 0-3 points you can now confidently play the Diamond King ready to finesse West for the missing Queen. As it happens West’s Queen was doubleton.

You now go one off for a very good match point score having lost just two top trumps and a a Spade.

What did I do wrong?  Well earlier in the tournament I learnt about the 2 reply showing 0-3 points when my partner had bid 2to my 2 opening  bid and at the time we had not discussed this reply and we ended up in 3  down 5 (OOPS) so now I knew all about the 2 response and when  this bid came up again, I asked my current opponent  what 2 meant and she confirmed 0-3 points. So what did I do wrong?  After East played the Heart  King and club Jack East could have no more points so like a complete beginner I finessed East for the missing Diamond Queen- I hope my partner, Nadia Libster,  an Israeli international will play with me again next year.J
