Our hand this week comes from a recent Hubert Phillips match and we won 11 imps on the board whereas we might have lost 6.
In one room we defended 2¨ which went two down (+200 to our team) and in the other room they played in 3NT and after misplaying went three down losing -300 so +500 to the good guys.
Now let’s see how to make 3NT. There are 13 points in dummy and 13 points in hand which means to say “WEST HAS ALL THE REMAINING POINTS”
With this in mind, there is no point in leading up to the Heart King. In order to get two Heart tricks West must have either a singleton or Doubleton Heart and we must start by playing a low Heart from each hand, after winning the first trick with dummy’s Queen of Diamonds.
The Ace is indeed a singleton and now the hand should become easy.
We win the Diamond continuation and take the Spade finesse up to dummy’s Jack. The Jack wins and we now unblock the king. We test the hearts and as expected find the hearts to be divided 4-1.
We now cash out, taking 3 Spades, 2 Hearts, 2 Diamonds and 2 clubs
