The opponent leads the ª9 and dummy wins the first trick with the Queen. You take stock and now have 2 spade tricks, 3 Heart tricks and 2 Diamond tricks, so you need two more. The Diamonds and Hearts will make any way so you will need to establish two more tricks. With such good control of all suits then you muster set about setting up Clubs.

After winning the first trick, immediately play a Club. East wins and of course fires back his partner’s suit. You win the Ace and play another club which East wins and not unreasonably plays back a final club. West can take his Spade King but that’s the end.

You have amassed 3 Spades, 3 Hearts, 2 Diamonds and  2 Clubs.

Had you gone after either red suit earlier no extra tricks would have resulted.!! J
