When this hand was played against me my partner led ª6 and after winning the first trick declarer wrapped up the next ten tricks ªand conceded the last two tricks when he was unable to get the extra Spade trick.
In his eagerness to play out the hand he cashed all his Club and Heart winners and at the 11th hour was unable to enjoy a second Spade trick.
What went wrong ?
Firstly, he didn’t count his tricks and secondly he didn’t establish an extra trick.
At trick one you can count 1 Spade, 4 Hearts, 1 Diamond and 4 clubs – 10 winners. If the clubs break 3:2 or 4:1 you can an extra club trick and if you merely play a second high Spade trick early on and displace their King you will build a trick in Spades too.
With this in mind after winning the first trick come to hand via a Heart and play that second Spade straight away to build the extra Spade trick. West now switched to a Diamond and the rest if plain sailing without getting blocked in either hand..
