Initially
on this hand you have
8 winners with 1 Spade,
5 Hearts and Ace King of Clubs. A 9th one will come form an
eventual Diamond ruff in dummy (the short hand). The 10th trick will
have to come from either a Spade or a Diamond. The bad news is that both the
Spade King and the Diamond Ace are sure to be offside in view of West’s
overcall.
Therefore
in order to get an extra trick from either Spades or Diamonds you will have to
set up an endplay against West.
You
can achieve this by
drawing trumps, eliminating Clubs and then throwing West in. Win the
first trick and immediately play a second and third club ruffing high. Enter
dummy with the Trump King and ruff the last Club high too. Now Clubs are
eliminated from both hands. Now draw trumps the last trumps. Now with West
overcalling, he is sure to have 5 Spades headed by the King so merely play Ace
Queen of Spades. West wins but is now well and truly endplayed. He can cash a
Spade but then has to give up a ruff and discard or open up the Diamond suit.
