You are now playing in 3NT instead of a safe 4©
contract (5:3 fit) Firstly you
need to cut communications between the two defenders. Presumably West is the
defender with long Diamonds (he led them) so you will need to hold up the
Diamond suit for two rounds (assuming the Diamonds break 5:3 or worse- you could
use the Rule of 7 here ie 7- 5 cards between your hand and dummy = 2 which means
you have to hold up for two rounds). You take
the third round of Diamonds. You now
lead up to dummy’s Heart and finesse the 9 not minding when that loses to East’s
Queen. As long as the Hearts now break 3:2 you will bring home 1 Spade, 4
Hearts, 1 Diamond and 4 clubs. (NB If you play from dummy
and finesse the Heart Jack this would work but it would be terribly wrong
to do this as you are finessing into the danger hand (UGH)
