Having ended in the inferior contract of 5§ the opposition make a trump lead. Not wanting to lead a Heart suggests that West has a good holding in Hearts and has opted for a safe trump lead.

With three losers on the horizon (Spade, Heart and Diamond) you will need to dump one of these losers. If you go for Diamonds first, that will not be satisfactory as you will not have the tempo to dump two losers from hand. However, f you go after Spades first then you will be able to dump a Heart from dummy on the fourth round of Spades. Playing the spades first also has the added bonus of taking a winning finesse of the opponents’ Queen. You play the 10 from dummy and although it loses you have set up your Jack to provide a place to dump the losing Heart in dummy. West gets of lead with a Diamond, East winning with the Ace and that’s the last trick the defence take. You win  3 Spades,1 Heart, 1 Diamond 5 trumps and 1 Heart ruffed in the short hand.
